Main purpose of the role:

The HV Technician will be responsible for safe and reliable operation and maintenance of electrical substation, overhead line, and general Balance of Plant (BOP) equipment. The HV technician will conduct scheduled inspections, oversee and witness third party electrical contractors to ensure scheduled maintenance is conducted as per OEM, EDFR and regulatory standards. Furthermore, the HV Technician will ensure that corrective maintenance is conducted within the contractual timelines.

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Perform routine and preventive maintenance tasks on electrical substations, including circuit breakers, transformers, switchgear, relays, Overhead Lines, underground MV cables and associated equipment.
  • Inspect, lubricate, and calibrate substation components to ensure optimal functionality and compliance with manufacturer specifications.
  • Management of assigned work orders via Computerised Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS)
  • Effective and timely reporting on scheduled and unscheduled maintenance tasks.
  • Identify and rectify potential equipment failures or performance issues proactively to prevent disruptions to power supply.
  •  Conduct diagnostic tests, to assess the condition and integrity of LV/MV/HV equipment.
  • Analyse test results and interpret data to identify potential faults, abnormalities, or deterioration in substation components.
  • Utilize advanced testing equipment and techniques to diagnose complex electrical problems and recommend appropriate corrective actions.
  • Investigate and troubleshoot electrical faults, malfunctions, and anomalies within substations, using systematic troubleshooting methodologies and equipment.
  • Execute timely and effective repairs or replacements of faulty components, wiring, insulation, and other substation infrastructure to restore normal operation.
  • Coordinate with engineering teams and subcontractors to address technical challenges and ensure the prompt resolution of electrical BOP issues.
  • Adhere to all safety protocols, procedures, and regulatory requirements governing substation operations, including lockout/tagout procedures, personal protective equipment (PPE) usage, and hazard identification.
  • Conduct regular safety inspections and risk assessments to mitigate potential hazards and maintain a safe working environment for yourself and others.
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards, codes, and regulations applicable to substation maintenance and operations, such as ORHVS, NRS 097, NRS 047 and NRS 048.
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, test results, equipment inspections, and repair work performed within substations.
  • Prepare detailed reports, logs, and documentation to document substation performance, maintenance history, and compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, managers, and other stakeholders regarding substation maintenance status, issues, and recommendations for improvement.
  • Perform switching of LV/MV/HV equipment when required according to intercompany procedures and the ORHVS standard.
  • Perform standby duties and act as Single Point of Contact (SPOC) with the system operator and utility.
  • Accept GMR2(7) appointment as well as associated responsibilities,

Must-have Qualifications and Certifications:

  • N3 Electrical Engineering as well as Electrical Trade Test
  • ORHVS

Preferred Qualifications and Certifications:

  • National Diploma in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Trade Test, ORHVS Certification

RELEVANT EXPERIENCES

Must-have years of professional experiences:

  • 8 Years general industry experience

Must-have years of industry experiences:

  • Minimum 8 years work experience, including experience in the energy sector globally, of which 3 years must have been spent working with electrical substation and or Overhead line experience.
  • Extensive knowledge of MV and HV electrical equipment and operations
